Source
- Form 1 - Pre-Injury History (participant or proxy)
- Form 2 - Interview, Mail-Out (participant or proxy)
Details
Do not include employment for sub-minimum wage, volunteer work, sheltered employment, employment with a job coach, or illegal activity. No minimum number of hours.
Each time an employer rehires the person, record as a new employer
Record self-employed persons as having one employer.

If less than two employment categories are coded, then use code 88 in remaining fields. Do not leave blanks. If patient is in the hospital at the time of annual follow-up, employment status is that status existing at the time of admission to the hospital. Competitive sub-minimum wage employment such as babysitting, newspaper delivery, and piecework should be coded 77. If patient is disabled, code as “other” if patient is receiving income support for his/her disability, if not, code as “unemployed”. If patient is not working but receiving workman’s’ compensation, code as “other”. If more than one, use the following list to prioritize: competitive employment, degree-oriented education, home management (homemaker), supported employment, job-directed/on-the-job training, sheltered employment, non-directed coursework, volunteer activity, active leisure/retirement, disability-related retirement, and no productive activity.
If patient is in jail, code 77 (other), and 88 (No additional codes) .
If participant works in a foreign country, assume wage is not sub-minimum unless there is information to the contrary.
If participant is employed for only part of the month prior to the follow-up evaluation, code employment status as during the majority of the work days during that month.
Characteristics
A third Employment Status was collected until 9/13/1994. No data available.

HOURS WORKED - ARCHIVE
Definition
Average number of hours per week usually worked at all paid competitive jobs (minimum wage or greater) in the month prior to injury. Includes illegal employment (see Employment Status [EMP] for more information and for data collection instructions).
Form
[X] Form 1
[X] Form 2
Source
- Form 1 - Pre-Injury History (participant or proxy)
- Form 2 - Interview, Mail-out (participant or proxy)
Details
To be collected if participant is currently competitively employed or special employed/on modified duty.
Skip this question if the person is not currently competitively employed. Fractions are to be rounded to the nearest whole number. 0.5 should be rounded upward.
Code actual number of hours per week only for those cases coded “05. Competitively Employed” in either the primary or secondary status of Employment Status [EMP]. Otherwise this variable must be coded “888. Not Applicable: Not currently competitively employed.”
If patient was employed more than 98 hours per week, code as 98 hours.
If patient works two jobs, add all hours together to code.
For “as needed” or sporadic employment, hours per week are calculated from the hours worked in the month prior to the evaluation.
If the participant notes significant variation in the number of hours worked per week, an estimation of the average hours worked can be calculated based on the individual’s reported routine. For example, if the person works 60 hours per week for half of the year and 20 hours per week for the other half of the year, they could be averaged to 40 hours per week ((60 + 20) / 2 = 40). The key is for the interviewer to assist with the calculations but do so out-loud so that the participant can determine if the correct assumptions were made and the participant can agree and give approval of the final result.)
Code as “888 - NA” if the person is not currently competitively employed.
Characteristics
When missing data codes were changed from 88 and 99 to 888 and 999 (4/1/05), the TBINDC changed all 88 and 99 codes in the database to 888 and 999. (There were almost no other codes in the 80-100hr/wk range.)

Characteristics
Between 10/1/2007 and 3/31/2009, data were collected with an emphasis on “since the last scheduled follow-up”.
In the last year (for 1, 2 year follow-ups),
In the last 3 years (for 5 year follow-ups),
In the last 5 years (for 10 year follow-ups),

WEEKS WORKED - ARCHIVE
Definition
Empwk - Number of weeks patient was competitively employed during the year prior to injury. Includes illegal employment (see Employment Status [EMP] for more information and for data collection instructions).
Empwkf
- At year 1 follow-up = Number of weeks of competitive employment during the year after injury. Includes illegal as well as legal employment.
- At all other followups = Number of weeks of competitive employment in the last year. Includes illegal as well as legal employment.
Form
[X] Form 1
[X] Form 2
Source
- Form 1 - Pre-Injury History (participant or proxy)
- Form 2 - Interview, Mail-out (participant or proxy)
Details
Include all weeks employed at minimum wage or higher. * Include vacation time and other types of leave if the person was paid during that time.
Round partial weeks up to the nearest whole week.
Weeks worked should be calculated by multiplying the number of months by 4.
If employment is infrequent but on a regularly scheduled basis, or if it is related to a specific function, then code the number of weeks during which the person has been employed. But, if days of employment are just random and the person might or might not do it again, then code the total number of weeks in which the person worked. (E.g., if the person worked 2 times a month for 9 months, then in the first situation 39 weeks should be coded. In the second situation 18 weeks should be coded.)
At follow-up, ask this question if the person has been competitively employed since the last evaluation, even if not currently competitively employed.
